One of the things that I enjoy the most is fishing. What better way to do that than with my grandkids? I moved recently close to the Broad River and adjacent to the river, a canal that provides water to power the turbines of the nearby power plant is just a block away from the house. After a recent rain, we decided to take the grandchildren to the canal to practice their casting.

Usually, they practice casting in the yard, but it is more fun when you can go to the canal and cast into the water. The recent rain made the canal rise up almost to the top of the bank. Usually, to cast into the water, the kids would have to throw far out to the water, but this way, they didn’t have to throw as far to ring the water. We also didn’t have to worry about getting hooked with a wild throw. Each of them had a practice casting fish on their rods.

We weren’t concerned about catching fish. To be honest, the water was flowing too fast. Normally that water is about 2 feet lower and not as fast. Sad part is that it was flowing so fast, you could see the rip currents in the canal water. We made sure to keep the kids safely back from the water while casting. For them, it was fun. They would cast into the current, and the current would take off with their practice caster which they then could reel to their hearts delight.

There is an entire summer ahead of us. I’m sure we will have many more days at the river or the canal with plenty of opportunities to catch fish. Until then, we will practice to get ready.
