Memories: The Anderson Jockey Lot

Anderson Jockey Lot

Around these parts, located in Anderson County South Carolina on Hwy 29 is one of the world’s largest flea markets. They are open on Saturdays and Sundays. When I was growing up, my family would go there and walk around. Sometimes we go to purchase produce. Sometimes it was because my dad was looking for something specific. But always, we would take a leisurely stroll through the buildings and outdoor tables.

When I was younger, there were fewer outdoor spaces. Now, it is so large, you could spend hours before seeing everything. And that’s if you actually stop and look at each booth or table.

Yesterday, I went and walked around with my grandchildren in tow. They wanted to look at everything. They wanted to see everything. And when we walked past the smell of those roasted peanuts, they wanted to eat everything. Indeed, it did make one hungry. But isn’t that the appeal of smells? To make one buy?

As I walked, I thought about what it would be like to put my own business there. I have a small online boutique (K and R Styles LLC) that I would love to have an actual place of business. I don’t mind doing the sewing and such at home, but I want a place where people who don’t know about me online can see my merchandise and get custom orders completed. In fact, it is one of my overall goals that I set for myself at the beginning of the year. I know I won’t be able to complete 140+ goals this year, but this is my ongoing list. Things that I want for myself. Not a resolution. A pathway I’ve set for myself as guidance.

Would this place be perfect for my business? It’s possible. Could I do this somewhere else? Of course!

Right now I’m just waiting to hear back from the owners to see if space is available. It’s a wait and see kind of thing. Who knows? Maybe the next memory I write about will be my own.

I am a southern girl born and raised in South Carolina. I grew up knowing I wanted to become a writer. When I'm not teaching middle school ELA, I'm either writing for my blogs or writing books.

For the most part, I'm usually sweet, always sassy with a side of sarcasm, and definitely Southern.
