There is something about thrift shopping that just seems so perfect. I mean, where else can you purchase a nice suitcase, two pairs of designer jeans, a cabbage patch kids doll, and six books for $16?
I went to the thrift store for one thing: a pair of jeans. I have lost weight and my current jeans no longer fit. I have been in need of a pair of jeans for at least two years now. I managed to find two pair of jeans in a much smaller size, plus I found my granddaughter an adorable Cabbage Patch Doll.
Before I left the store, I decided to hit my favorite section: the books. As I was looking through the books, I recognized a familiar binding and reached down to flip through the book. It was an old cookbook, the kind that churches and other groups would create and sell to raise funds. Usually the recipes are contributed by the group members. As I flipped through, I found some recipes I definitely liked. Then, I looked on the bottom shelf, and I found the motherload. It took me a while, but I finally whittled my selection down to about five cookbooks and one quilting book.
Once I arrived home, I learned that the cookbooks were a tremendous treasure. One of them contained the recipe for a black walnut pound cake that I have been trying to find for years! I once had the recipe in a similar book a long time ago. Plus, I found another recipe for a chocolate pound cake that I have also been searching for. I have tried several chocolate pound cake recipes, but none of them had the texture I was searching for.
Tonight, I am testing out a recipe for something that I remember eating during my childhood, but I haven’t had since. I hope it tastes every bit as good as I remember.
